Founded in 1992, FoProBiM is a registered, non-profit conservation NGO in Haiti. As one of Haiti’s oldest environmental organizations its pioneering work focusses on includes raising awareness, educating and capacity building at the government, community and individual levels to preserve biodiversity and improve livelihoods as well as conducting scientific research and environmental monitoring. The NGO works with watershed and coastal area communities, women’s groups, youth, farmers, fishers, and engages with a wide variety of sectors such as tourism, fuel production, transportation, marketing, processing, etc. to improve the sustainable use of natural resources.

FoProBiM is a member of IUCN and the IUCN National Focal Point in Haiti, sits on the IUCN’s Commission on Protected Areas, Marine and Commission on Ecosystem Management, and is a member of the International Coral Reefs Initiative (ICRI), WIDECAST, The Ocean Conservancy, the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network (GCRMN) and the Coastal and Beach Stability Program (COSALC) among others.  It has also acted as primary consultant for coastal and marine resources in drawing up Haiti’s national environmental action plan (NEAP) and executed a wide variety of projects for institutions as varied as the IDB, UNEP, UNDP, OAS, Whitley Fund for Nature, the Haitian Ministry of Environment, The Nature Conservancy, and the US Departments of Agriculture (IITF – International Institute of Tropical Forestry), State, Commerce (NOAA: NMFS, CCFHR, OIA), and Interior (USFWS).

FoProBim played a lead role in the creation of two MPAs and is currently expanding its marine turtle and mangrove reforestation/rehabilitation conservation activities. It has also guided the government in the development of laws banning plastic bags, Styrofoam containers, and the blanket protection of all of Haiti’s mangroves.
