Why Nature Caribe promotes CLME+C-SAP

Our coastal and marine areas are a vital part of our island environments. At the same time, our geographic situation makes us very vulnerable to environmental deterioration caused by bad development practices and the effects of climate change.  As the Secretary-General of the United Nations has stated, “Climate change is, quite simply, an existential threat for most life on the planet — including, and especially, the life of humankind.”

The CLME + CSAP initiative provides a framework to guide the indispensable participation of civil society organizations (CSOs) in actions leading towards climate change adaptation. The framework serves as a guide and indicator of what is being done and what are the needs in the coastal and marine areas of our countries.

Nature Caribé supports the initiative of CLME+ CSAP and wants to demonstrate through the project “Engaging Civil Society in the implementation of the Strategic Action Programme for the Sustainable Management of the Shared Living Marine Resources of the Caribbean and North Brazil Shelf Large Marine Ecosystems (CLME+ C-SAP)” what CSOs and SMEs in  the Caribbean can do under this framework. These efforts are being funded by the financial support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Global Environmental Facility (GEF) Project:

“Catalyzing Implementation of the Strategic Action Programme (SAP) for the Sustainable Management of Shared Living Marine Resources in the Caribbean and North Brazil Shelf Large Marine Ecosystems” and executed by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) in close collaboration with a large number of global, regional and national-level partners.

How to engage

If you consider yourself to be part of the civil society – regional, national and local CSOs, SMEs and SME associations – then you are already part of it!

Civil society is already playing a key role in the conservation of the marine environment and development of sustainable livelihoods. The objective of CLME+ C-SAP is to contribute to strengthening the role, participation and ownership of civil society actors in the implementation of the CLME+ SAP to achieve the long-term vision for the marine environment of the CLME+ region.
